Brief History of Victoria Park
Victoria Park used to be part of the South Fields of Leicester and until 1883 it was the city’s race course. Until the mid-20th century, there used to be a Victorian grandstand which served as a pavilion. However, it was ruined by a German parachute bomb. Then in 1958, a new pavilion was built and opened. In 1882, the place was opened as a park. From 1884 to 1890, Leicester City Football Club, formerly known as Leicester Fosse, played in this park on various occasions.
More About Victoria Park
The park abounds in pathways which are shaded by avenues of trees and make this park a perfect open space. In the park, you can see two war memorials. One is the memorial arch (Cenotaph) which commemorates the dead of the First World War. The second is a Rock Memorial near the pavilion which commemorates the American 82nd Airbourne division. Sir Edwin Lutyens designed both these memorials. Back in the 19th century, the Victoria Park was the venue for fairs, but nowadays it’s a location for numerous events, including Leicester’s Caribbean Carnival and Remembrance Sunday parades.
The Park is open every day from dawn until dusk and the entrance is free. You can find the Victoria Park on London Road, Leicester, LE1 7RY.
